Through the Bible with John...Genesis

Hi,
I hope to travel with you on a journey through the amazing word of God.  This series will give you a little information about each book of the Bible and hopefully encourage you to want more.  Enjoy!

Background:

The book of Genesis consists of many different stories and traditions of the first humans.  Christians believe that the book takes an abundance of stories and weaves them together into a wonderful and complete picture of the creation of the universe, the fall of man, the Great Flood, and the foundation of the nation of Israel.  The book of Genesis covers a timeline of roughly 7000-1500 BC.

Style:

Genesis is made up of many different styles, including stories, poems, and genealogies.  It is a message of God's love for his people and his creation.

Significance:

Genesis means "origins".  This book describes the origins of the universe.  It details information about the meaning of life and the power of God.  It will let you know about God choosing a nation which later on in the Bible is a parallel of how He chose you.

The Big Idea:

Genesis shows a lot of things that we should not do...murder, rebellion, family problems, betrayals, and more.  You might come away from reading it wondering if God made a mistake.  But the big picture might be that we can take consolation in knowing that a forgiving, loving, patient Father is exhibiting those same traits toward us.
