“Only a Holy God”
Part 1
July 5, 2020
-What does holy mean?
It means “set apart” or “unlike any other”
-A part of ascribing God His due holiness is realizing that the weight of it is far above anything we can say or describe.
-Why does holiness matter?
1. It reveals the full depth and weight of the Gospel message
2. It makes God’s negative actions and reactions (anger, chastisement, punishment, judgement) make sense.
3. It makes God’s positive actions and reactions (grace, love, mercy) so much sweeter.
4. It makes life bearable.
5. It makes eternity believable and achievable.
1. God is holy in His essence: Genesis 1, Exodus 3:5, Exodus 3:14.
2. God is holy in His character: Exodus 5:1-2.
3. God is holy in His expectations: Leviticus 22:31-33.
4. God is holy in His accountability: Numbers 1:20-46 and Numbers 26:1-51.
5. God is holy in His universal will: Deuteronomy 1:1.
What does this mean for us?
1. The qualities of God’s holiness have not changed in the time between the events of the Pentateuch and today.
2. We must hold the same standard of holiness in that we must not compare our holiness to other people. We must compare our holiness to God.
3. Rest in the comfort that our failures do not affect God’s love for us.
Leviticus 11:44, “For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy for I am holy” (ESV).
